In a surprising twist, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has officially ruled out his highly anticipated 2026 presidential bid, choosing instead to endorse his father, President Yoweri Museveni, for a seventh term in office. The announcement came early Saturday morning via Muhoozi’s official X handle, where he revealed a divine revelation that led to his decision.
“I would like to announce that I will not be on the ballot paper in 2026,” Muhoozi declared, attributing his decision to guidance from a higher power. “Almighty God told me to focus on His Army first.”
This u-turn comes just months after Muhoozi had confidently declared his intention to run for the presidency in the next general elections. His withdrawal is sure to shock his supporters, many of whom had already begun mobilizing for his campaign. In 2023, Muhoozi had boldly proclaimed, “In the name of Jesus Christ my God, in the name of all the young people of Uganda and the world and in the name of our great revolution, I will stand for the presidency in 2026.”
He went further at the time to challenge the dominance of older leaders, stating, “Enough of the old people ruling us. Dominating us. It’s time for our generation to shine.”
Now, however, Muhoozi is throwing his weight behind his father, Yoweri Museveni .
“I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections,” he said, strongly suggesting that Museveni, 80, will seek re-election in 2026.
The sudden shift has left many wondering about Muhoozi’s next steps. He hinted at a renewed focus on his military career, saying, “For me NOTHING on this earth is more Holier than UPDF! So, I cannot think of a greater honour than being in UPDF. It is Holy Ground!! God bless Holy UPDF and Sacred Uganda forever!!!”
As the 2026 elections approach, the political landscape remains dynamic. With opposition figures like Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and Dr. Kizza Besigye likely to participate, Muhoozi’s absence from the race adds a new twist to the competition. His decision to step back from politics, at least for now, and prioritize the army has left his supporters and critics alike speculating about what his long-term plans might be.
