Police in Kisoro have arrested Ronald Mfitumukiza in connection with the death of his 75-year-old mother, Consilata Nyirabagenzi, a resident of Kanyamegeri village, Chihe Parish, Nyakinama Sub-county.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed to The Eye Media that the incident occurred on November 30, 2024, around 4:00 PM.
It is reported that the elderly woman, fearing for her safety due to her son’s violent behavior at home, sought help at Yesu Arakiza Pentecostal Church. She encountered Pastor Uwimana Jesca and other women, asking them to assist in restraining her son, who had been destroying property and throwing items out of the house.
“Upon their return to the home, an altercation occurred, during which Mfitumukiza allegedly struck his mother on the head with a wooden plank with nails. She collapsed and died from the injury,” says Maate.
A report was made to Nyakinama Police Post by Gasore Edward, a relative of the deceased, and Kisoro Central Police Station was notified.
“The scene was visited and documented, a postmortem was conducted on-site, and the body was handed over to the family for burial,” added the police spokesperson of the region.
Mfitumukiza was arrested, and police investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
