In a thought-provoking tweet on his official X handle, Hajji Faruk Kirunda, the Special Presidential Assistant – Press and Mobilization, has raised concerns about the functioning of the Court Martial and suggested that greater emphasis should be placed on preventive measures to minimize the number of cases reaching the military court.
Kirunda who doubles as Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, argued that before an individual is indicted, there is often a level of suspicion or culpability that places them at risk of facing charges in the Court Martial.
He emphasized the importance of discouraging behaviors that expose individuals to such risks, particularly armed violence and treason.
According to Kirunda, promoting a culture of law-abiding citizenship, positive engagement, and nonviolence could greatly reduce the strain on civilian courts, allowing them to focus on other pressing matters.
He also highlighted a troubling trend in public discourse, noting that even his simple, advisory posts on X have attracted threats of violence, personal harm, and treasonous insinuations.
“Imagine what goes on behind the scenes,” he said Wednesday, December 4, 2024, expressing concern over the increasingly hostile environment in online and offline discussions.
The Deputy Presidential Press Secretary’s remarks come at a time when the functioning of the Court Martial has been a topic of growing debate among the legal fraternity and the public.
His call for a shift toward more proactive measures to encourage peace and prevent crime underscores the need for a broader societal effort to address the root causes of criminal behavior before individuals are brought before the Court Martial.
