Jinja City: Singer-turned-politician and Bugweri Woman Member of Parliament, Rachael Magoola, has voiced her concerns over the increasing prevalence of obscene music in Uganda’s entertainment industry.
Speaking during her appearance on 89.4 NBS FM’s popular mid-morning show, Ensi Nebyayo, hosted by Sir Grace Mwesigwa on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Magoola criticized the role of radio and TV music selectors in promoting morally questionable songs.
The former Afrigo Band star and Obangaina hitmaker expressed her disappointment, stating that immoral songs have significantly contributed to moral decay in society.
“I wonder why radio and TV selectors include obscene songs in their playlists,” she remarked, adding that the responsibility lies with selectors to shield the public from music that undermines societal values.
Magoola drew comparisons to cultural traditions in Buganda and Busoga, where such songs were strictly confined to rituals and performed at night after the birth of twins. Children were prohibited from listening or participating in these performances. However, she lamented that today’s artists openly record and release such songs without fear of repercussions.
She also criticized the behavior of some modern artists, noting their tendency to dress provocatively, perform inappropriate dances on stage, and sing lyrics laced with obscenity.
Her remarks come when it has become normal for singers in Uganda to dress half-naked, dance bad dances on stage, and sing obscene songs.
Here at the Eye Media we join Magoola in calling for a collective effort to restore cultural and moral integrity by withholding airplay for indecent music and promoting responsible entertainment.
