Police in Moroto have launched an investigation into the tragic suicide of a police constable at the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) detach in Lokwakwa village, Lorengedwat Sub-county, Nabilatuk District.
The deceased, identified as PC Wafula Nasur, a 46-year-old police officer from Kaserem, Kapchorwa District, reportedly took his own life using his SMG rifle on Thursday morning.
Police Confirm Investigation
Karamoja regional police spokesperson Michael Longole confirmed the incident, stating that senior officers had already visited the scene to gather information.
“The Uganda Police Force is deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, PC Wafula Nasur. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Longole said.
Possible Cause Linked to Stress
While the exact cause of the suicide remains unknown, Longole suggested that stress could have played a role, though investigators will determine the precise circumstances.
“It is important to recognize the impact of mental health challenges, particularly for officers working in high-stress environments. We encourage members of the armed forces to seek support from fellow officers or professionals whenever they feel overwhelmed,” he added.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the ASTU unit and the local community, highlighting the need for mental health awareness and support within the security forces.
Authorities have urged officers facing psychological distress to seek help rather than suffer in silence.
