In a bold move aimed at safeguarding integrity and credibility within Uganda’s Islamic leadership, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has terminated Sheikh Huzaima Magumba from his position as District Kadhi of Bugweri Muslim District, effective immediately.
According to an official letter signed by His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Magumba was found to have submitted forged academic credentials, specifically a Thanawi certificate, during his nomination and appointment as District Kadhi.
“After a comprehensive review, it has been established that the documents submitted were forged,” the letter states, describing the act as a serious violation of Article 19(3)(b) of the UMSC Constitution, which outlines the qualifications required for the position.
The decision follows a formal complaint lodged by concerned Muslims from Bugweri District, which prompted an internal investigation by the UMSC. The Mufti consequently directed Sheikh Magumba to vacate office immediately and hand over all UMSC property and equipment in his possession to the District Chairperson.
“This action is taken to uphold the integrity, credibility, and values of the Uganda Muslim leadership,” the Mufti wrote, emphasizing the need to preserve trust in Bugweri and the nation at large.
When contacted for comment via WhatsApp, Sheikh Huzaima Magumba downplayed the situation, saying:
“It’s just politics of Bugweri, and the truth will be ironed soon.”
Asked to elaborate further, he curtly responded:
“That is enough. I have no more about it.”
The remarks suggest possible internal power struggles and leave more questions than answers regarding the controversy surrounding his academic documents.
Copies of the termination notice have been sent to the Bugweri District RDC, DPC, LCV leadership, and UMSC officials across the country.
The sacking of Sheikh Magumba has intensified debate around vetting processes within Uganda’s religious leadership, as the Muslim community increasingly demands transparency and accountability.
