KAMULI – In a bold political move that has shaken Kamuli’s NRM circles, Anita Flavia Omondi, a rising political figure and aspiring MP for Bugabula County North, has publicly thrown her weight behind Speaker Anita Among’s bid for Second National Vice Chairperson of the ruling NRM party.
Omondi, known for her charismatic oratory and growing grassroots support, made her stance known in a series of pointed messages shared in the Kamuli NRM WhatsApp group, where she drew metaphorical lines between loyalty and betrayal.
“Without fear of contradiction,” she wrote, “you are either cold or hot. If you were hot and pour ice on you, you definitely become cold and lighting you up to become hot again might be impossible.”
The fiery analogy is widely interpreted as a veiled yet unmistakable jab at Rebecca Kadaga, the incumbent NRM Second National Vice Chairperson and Kamuli Woman MP, who is facing stiff competition from Among, the current Speaker of Parliament.
Omondi’s declaration makes her the first prominent female political figure from Kamuli to publicly denounce Kadaga’s leadership—a significant defection in a district long considered the political fortress of the former Speaker.
In another post, Omondi made her point very clear with grace and faith: “…..we thank God kuba amusula mu kifuuba ni Anita,” she posted, signaling unity with Speaker Among. “Personally, I am ready to embrace my namesake… But for now, I’m team Exchange—Eastern Kamuli and Female Teso.”
Omondi’s support appears deeply personal. Her husband, Mr. David Mugoowa, a longtime financier and political ally of Kadaga, recently fell out with the veteran politician.
Tensions reportedly peaked during the recent Kamuli NRM chairperson elections at the Youth Center, when Kadaga allegedly cast her vote for Mugowa’s rival— Mathias Bazanya who went on to win the seat. Bazanya was not in the lead until the former speaker went behind him.
Voters on other lines abandoned their candidates and joined the Kadaga’s preferred candidate. The perceived betrayal has reverberated across political camps in the district.
“[She] has become the face of political greed. For over 40 years, she has occupied positions meant to empower emerging women leaders, yet she continues to cling on. Is she not empowered enough by now?” questioned Flavia Anita Omondi, in a message sent to The Eye Media .
“Her actions have suffocated young women who are trying to rise in politics. Instead of mentoring, she blocks. Instead of empowering, she dominates,” Omondi angrily added.
“Every election cycle, she claims she’s being fought — but why is it always her? ………… Maybe the real problem isn’t others fighting her, but her herself”.
Sources close to the couple suggest Mugoowa’s disappointment played a critical role in shifting Omondi’s political allegiance—effectively ending years of loyalty to Kadaga’s camp.
Omondi is now directly and openly campaigning for Anita Among.
“I implore Ugandans to support my namesake, Hon. Anita, for the CEC seat because these other people have become more of a liability than an asset to the NRM,” said Flavia Anita Omondi. “She is no longer mobilizing — she is demobilizing.”
“Instead of uniting party members, she is sowing seeds of division across the district. The time has come for the NRM to make a bold decision: retire her and give way to a more vibrant, forward-looking leader.”
“If we truly care about the continuity and future of the NRM, we must give leaders like Anita the space to re-energize the party
As the battle for NRM’s Second National Vice Chairmanship intensifies, Omondi’s defection underscores a growing rift within the party’s eastern bloc, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest that could redefine the balance of power in Busoga politics.
