A suspected Karamojong warrior was shot dead on Friday morning after he and an armed group attacked Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers who were guarding a burial site in Kotido District.
The incident occurred during the burial of Lance Corporal Francis Ilukol Lowak, who had been murdered on May 26, 2025, by suspected Karamojong warriors in Kanalobae East, Maarus Sub County. The late soldier was attached to the 57th Battalion under the 409 Brigade based in Arua.
Following his killing, joint security forces were deployed from Lokitelaebu Army Detachment to provide security at the burial grounds. However, at around 7:00 am on May 30, a group of armed warriors, believed to be from the Jie clan, launched an attack on the soldiers at Kanaamwar Village.
The forces responded swiftly, resulting in the death of one of the attackers. Security personnel recovered an SMG rifle (registration number MB5966), 22 rounds of live ammunition, and one empty magazine from the scene.
The slain warrior was later identified as Achuka Aluuka, a resident of Kalemuarengan Village, Kotido Sub County.
Mike Longole, spokesperson for the Mt. Moroto Region Police, confirmed the incident and revealed that Achuka was on a wanted list for masterminding a series of attacks across Kotido, Napak, Abim, Agago, Kitgum, and Karenga districts.
“We managed to put one suspect out of action while others fled the scene,” Longole said, adding that the attack on a burial site was a “senseless and cowardly act of violence.”
The joint forces have since intensified operations to pursue the remaining attackers.
