The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Monday officially received Lawrence Alionzi, former Guild President of Makerere University, who crossed from the opposition to join the party.

Alionzi, who was elected on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, was formally welcomed by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala.

Alionzi was accompanied by a group of youth leaders who also declared their decision to join the ruling party.

Speaking after receiving the youthful leaders, SG Todwong said he was pleased to see more young Ugandans embracing the NRM’s vision.

“I’m excited to see young people joining the movement. Their energy, ideas, and patriotism will help drive Uganda forward,” Todwong said.

The youthful defectors cited lack of clear ideology and weak strategic leadership within the opposition as reasons for abandoning their former political camps.

“We realised that without proper ideology and leadership, we cannot steer this country forward. We are now ready to contribute to national development under NRM,” said Alionzi.

The development is seen as a major boost for NRM’s ongoing efforts to attract youth leadership and consolidate support at university level and among young professionals across the country.

The NRM leadership has in recent months intensified campaigns to engage young voters and youth activists, positioning the party as a vehicle for national transformation and inclusive growth.
