As Uganda continues to commemorate Heroes and Martyrs this June, Special Presidential Assistant on Mobilization and Press, Hajji Faruk Kirunda has come out to strongly defend the integrity of the criteria used to select national heroes and medal recipients.
In a thought-provoking message posted on his official X (Twitter) handle, Kirunda reminded the public—especially the youth—that the status of “Hero” or “Martyr” is not handed out lightly or politically, but is earned through sacrifice for noble, just, and lasting causes.
His remarks come in the wake of growing public debate over the selection of some decorated individuals, with some questioning whether all medal recipients truly deserve national recognition.
Kirunda fired back at such sentiments, cautioning against undermining the legacy of Uganda’s celebrated heroes.
“Hero and Martyr status is earned for a just and noble cause that stands in perpetuity,” he wrote. “It is not a matter of putting one’s life on the line after being hoodwinked and exploited to advance political, religious or other forms of extremism.”
He emphasized that the individuals being celebrated by the nation were inspired by patriotism, divine purpose, and a desire to serve future generations—not simply by orders, emotion, or momentary bravery.
“The people we are celebrating were very highly inspired with a divine and patriotic purpose… That’s why the causes they stood for have remained for posterity,” Kirunda stated.
His message comes at a crucial time when questions are being raised about the National Honours and Awards system. Kirunda’s firm stance serves as a reminder that true heroism transcends politics, popularity, or convenience.
