Shock and grief have gripped residents of Rukoro village, Kyanika Town Council in Kisoro District after a 24-year-old man allegedly killed his own mother during a violent domestic fight with his wife.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Kwizera Andrew, was arrested for the brutal murder of his 72-year-old mother, Molly Nyirabirihanze, on the night of Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident.

Maate stated that the tragedy unfolded around midnight when Kwizera reportedly picked a fight with his wife. The commotion prompted his mother to intervene and try to rescue her daughter-in-law.

“Unfortunately, instead of calming down, Kwizera turned his rage towards his mother, striking her on the head with a wooden stick,” Maate said. “The blow caused deep injuries which resulted in excessive bleeding, likely leading to her death on the spot.”

Police swiftly responded to the scene after receiving the report. A murder case was opened, and investigators documented the scene, recovered the blood-stained wooden stick used in the assault, and recorded statements from eyewitnesses.

The deceased’s body was taken to Kisoro Hospital for postmortem and later handed over to her relatives for burial.

Kwizera is currently in police custody and will be charged in court upon completion of investigations.

Police have condemned the act, urging the public to find peaceful ways of resolving domestic disputes rather than resorting to violence.
