KITAGWENDA — In a dramatic twist that has sent ripples through the national political landscape, Hajji Bruhan Sserunga — father of Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa, the presidential flag bearer for the Common Man’s Party — has openly thrown his weight behind President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Addressing thousands of enthusiastic supporters at Kayombo Primary School during the President’s campaign rally today, Mzee Sserunga, a revered community elder, declared that he had witnessed Uganda’s long journey from turbulence to stability and credited President Museveni for steering the country in the right direction.

“I am a civilian veteran. I helped the NRA war people by offering shelter. I have seen where this country has come from and where it is going. I hail President Museveni for his good and wise leadership,” he said to loud applause.

Sserunga praised the President for championing peace, development, and wealth creation, urging the people of Kitagwenda to overwhelmingly return him to office for continued progress.

President Museveni, clearly touched by the endorsement, lauded Sserunga’s decades-long contribution to the nation.
“I thank God for enabling me to meet my veteran comrade Mzee Bruhan Sserunga, the father of Munyagwa, who understands the challenges of our fishing communities. I will engage him further,” the President said.

Farmers Embracing the Money Economy

The President applauded Kitagwenda farmers for embracing commercial agriculture, noting that 60 percent of households are now active participants in the money economy — a dream he has pushed since the 1960s.
“Development is for all, but wealth is personal,” he reminded the crowd. “Yes, development is key, but wealth at household level shouldn’t be taken for granted.”

He cited the example of George Matongo, a model farmer who transitioned from subsistence to profitable modern farming, as evidence that wealth creation begins at home.

Peace, Security and Infrastructure Priorities

President Museveni thanked the Local Defence Units for supporting the UPDF in defeating ADF rebels, adding that Kitagwenda’s proximity to DRC makes peace non-negotiable.

He further revealed that government has secured funding for the Ibanda–Kagongo–Kabujogera–Kamwenge road, though some projects have faced delays due to prioritization of national security needs.

Skilling the Youth and Job Creation

The President highlighted transformative success stories from Presidential Skilling Hubs, including that of Ninsiima Moria from Kitagwenda, who left school at Primary Three but later trained in hairdressing and mindset change. She now runs her own salon, employs two workers, and earns income from agriculture.

Factories, the President noted, have created 1.3 million jobs compared to 480,000 in government — a reason he insists African economies must aim for broader markets across Uganda, East Africa, and the continent.

Speaker Among Commends Kitagwenda’s Loyalty

Speaker of Parliament and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among hailed Kitagwenda residents for their loyalty and thanked them for the warm reception accorded to President Museveni.
She applauded the President for granting Kitagwenda district status, saying it laid the foundation for improved service delivery.

Among highlighted government interventions in education, health, water, and agriculture, announcing that Ntara Health Centre IV will be upgraded to a district general hospital. She also confirmed that the Ibanda–Kagongo–Kabujogera–Kamwenge road has been approved for construction.

District Leadership Highlights Progress and Gaps

NRM District Chairperson Nathan Masana presented a detailed report on Kitagwenda’s progress since becoming a district.
The district now boasts 13 sub-counties and town councils, 55 parishes and 356 villages, with a population of 184,947, according to the 2024 census.

Under the Parish Development Model, 55 parishes have received Shs16.89 billion, with 99.91 percent disbursed to 16,875 households.
The district also has 18 Emyooga SACCOs with 12,543 members and Shs960 million injected so far.

However, Masana pointed out gaps:

  • 23 parishes lack government primary schools
  • 7 out of 13 sub-counties have no government secondary school
  • 8 sub-counties lack HC III facilities
  • Water access stands at 62%, leaving 37.9% unserved

He called for the upgrading of health facilities, construction of new HC IIIs, and expansion of water systems.

On agriculture, Masana praised solar-powered irrigation projects boosting coffee productivity and generating significant income for farmers.
He also welcomed ongoing electricity grid expansion, with a pledge to connect all remaining sub-counties in the next term.

A Unified Call for Continuity

Masana concluded by thanking President Museveni for peace, stability, and development, pledging total support from Kitagwenda residents as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections.

The event drew NRM CEC members, MPs, religious and cultural leaders, and thousands of energized supporters — marking yet another strong show of force for the ruling party in western Uganda.
