Police in Kisoro have arrested an M23 rebel who staged an illegal roadblock to rob money and other items.
It is alleged, 22-year-old Gestin Ngoga a Rwandan M23 soldier resident of Rucuro Kiwanja in DRC, robbed Lawrence Nasasira of his money and phones.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate confirmed the incident and revealed that it happened on September10, 2023 at 5:00pm at Kinanira village Mupaka town council.
Maate says the victim was riding his motorcycle when the said suspect armed with an SMG rifle No CDFA2719381 with two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunitions intercepted him and robbed him of his Shs 400.000= and two mobile phones.
After the robbery the suspect ordered the victim to go away.
Maate says the victim immediately went and reported to Mupaka border police post in Kisoro district, where the suspect was pursued and arrested by UPDF 35 Battalion officers and the rifle, ammunitions and the phones were recovered.
“The suspect being an M23 rebel, the UPDF took over the matter and they have taken him and the exhibits of the recovered rifle and ammunitions to 2nd Division headquarters Makenke Mbarara for further managemeny” Maate said.
A casefile of aggravated robbery was opened, statement of the victim and suspect obtained as Inquiries continue.
