Following the gruesome murder of Mr. Alexander Isabirye, the former headteacher of Mwiri Boys Primary School, the police in Jinja at the weekend carried out an operation in which 87 suspected criminals, including the suspected killer were arrested.

The police said Monday afternoon that they also recovered a motorcycle on which the killers travelled and recorded vital statements from the slain headteacher’s neighbours who, through their windows, saw the killers.

Kiira Region police spokesperson James Mubi told The Eye Media Crime Desk that exhibits, including pangas, marijuana, stones, iron bars, house breaking implements and suspected stolen properties were recovered from the suspects.

“One of the 87 suspects we arrested is the man believed to have murdered Mr. Isabirye Alex. We are so determined and shall make sure those who did it are brought to book,” vowed Mubi, adding that the suspected criminals were picked from black spots of Jinja City.

“The operations that we conducted between March 1 and March 3, 2024 led to the apprehension of the suspects who include seventy male adults and ten females and are being charged accordingly,” said Mubi.

According to Mubi, twelve males are charged with aggravated robbery while thirteen males and six female adults are facing charges of malicious damage and obstruction.

“35 male adults and four females are charged with public nuisance while 17 male juveniles, alleged to be street children, were arrested from the city centre,” he clarified.

“It was an intensified intelligence led operations conducted over the weekend, and we arrested them. They are being charged accordingly,” Mubi stated.

Police have embarked on collaborating with the probation office of the city to establish a babies home that shall house and rehabilitate the minors reported to be engaging in criminal acts.

“We are working with the probation officer to look for babies’ homes to have these street children rehabilitated. These are radicalized street children who are into actual commission of crimes like phone snatching, housebreaking, stealing motor vehicle number plates, causing havoc towards party goers in the wee hours and others,” said Mubi.
