In a tragic accident on December 29, 2024, Budaka Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nusura Nabukalu lost her life in a road collision along the Jinja-Iganga highway in Mayuge District.

The crash involved her official vehicle, a Toyota Double Cabin (registration number UG 4803C), and a truck (registration number KDH 025V).

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when her driver, Khalid Waiswa, attempted to overtake another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.

While initial reports from police indicated that both Nabukalu and her driver succumbed to their injuries, family members have clarified that Waiswa survived the crash.

He was first treated at Nakavule Hospital in Iganga District before being transferred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.

“He has gained his consciousness and can now recognize whoever comes here although with a lot of pain in the chest,” said of the relatives attending to him, Tuesday December 31, 2024 afternoon.

The family came out following earlier reports which alleged that Waiswa had also died.

Adding to this development, the Office of the President has stepped in to support the driver’s recovery.

In a message delivered by the Head of the RDC Secretariat, Major Asiimwe, the Secretary to the Office of the President, Hajji Yunus Kakande, announced that the government will cover all of Waiswa’s medical bills.

The gesture, Kakande stated, underscores the President’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of all government personnel and their families.

Nabukalu had been returning from a function in Nawansinga Village, Iganga District, when the accident occurred.

Her untimely passing has left the community in mourning, with many recalling her as a dedicated and selfless public servant. Tributes from government officials and community leaders have emphasized her commitment to improving the lives of the people she served.

This tragic incident has sparked discussions about road safety, especially the risks associated with overtaking in high-traffic areas. Nabukalu was Monday afternoon laid to rest at Jinja City Muslim cemetery.
