Rukiga District – A suspected armed robber was killed by a mob in Nyakanengo Cell, Rutare Ward, Muhanga Town Council, after an alleged botched robbery at a local bar on Wednesday night.
The deceased, identified as Bosco Muganizi, 18, a security guard attached to SAFE TAC Security Company, reportedly stormed a bar owned by a one Mbarinawe Senior at around 10:30pm alongside an unidentified accomplice.
According to the police, the two suspects were armed with a gun and a bow and arrow. It is alleged that upon entering the bar, they ordered patrons to sit down and demanded all the money in their possession.
However, the situation took a swift turn when one of the customers, only identified as Elias, confronted the suspect who was wielding the bow and arrow. In the scuffle that followed, the second suspect fled the scene with the gun, leaving his accomplice behind.
The patrons and local residents quickly overpowered Muganizi and began beating him. The LC1 chairperson of the area reportedly called the police, who arrived at the scene and attempted to rescue the suspect. Unfortunately, he died on the way to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
Speaking to journalists, Kigezi region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
“The scene was visited, processed and documented. A bow and arrow was recovered, and the body of the deceased was taken to Kabale hospital mortuary for a postmortem,” ASP Maate said.
He added that inquiries are underway to identify and apprehend the second suspect, who is believed to be on the run with the firearm.
