The race to fill the vacant Bugweri District Khadi position is gaining momentum, with the Muslim leadership set to elect three nominees this Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The development was confirmed by Mr. Abdul Jaril Kasango, the head of elections for Bugweri Muslim District.
He told The Eye Media that the Independent Electoral Commission of the Muslims will convene a meeting of delegates who form the district’s electoral college.
“The seven county sheikhs, together with their executives and councillors, will convene to nominate three candidates. We shall then forward the elected names to the Mufti, who will make the final selection and appoint the District Khadi from among them,” Mr. Kasango said.
The electoral college is composed of representatives drawn from the seven Muslim counties that make up Bugweri District.
Thursday’s election follows months of leadership uncertainty after the controversial removal of former District Khadi, Sheikh Huzaima Magumba.
As The Eye Media previously reported, Sheikh Magumba was thrown out of office earlier last month after it emerged that he had used forged academic documents to secure the position — a revelation that rocked the district’s Muslim leadership.
Since Magumba’s ouster, the District Khadi post has remained vacant, with interim leadership arrangements instituted by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.
Many Muslim faithful in Bugweri are now eagerly watching the upcoming election, hoping for a transparent process that will restore integrity and unity in the district’s religious leadership.
