In the ongoing operations against the commercial charcoal business, authorities in Nakapiripirit have arrested a police driver founding loading 70 bags of charcoal on a police truck.
The truck which came from Mbale City was found loading the bags of charcoal in Kamusalaba area.
Officials of the District Security Committee led by RDC, Michael Okurut swung into action following a tip off from concerned residents.
There is a presidential directive banning commercial charcoal trade.
Okurut expressed his astonishment at finding police personnel, who are tasked with implementing the presidential directives, involved in violating the guidelines.
The RDC said the detained police personnel will aid in the ongoing investigations into the matter.
He emphasized the need for the driver to be arraigned before court and charged to send a strong message to other officers who might believe they are exempt from the law.
