The suspect has been identified as Penelope Atubasise a resident of Rutooma central village, Buhunga sub-county, Rukungiri district and the deceased as Promise Amumpaire.
It’s alleged that on Friday July 14, 2023, Atubasise served her children supper as early 6:00pm and left them in the house unattended to. She returned from the happening Rutooma trading centre at around 10:30pm.
It is further alleged that when she returned she found Promise missing and the door open.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson said Saturday evening that if the mother was not involved in her daughter’s murder then she neglected her children.
“She says she found the door open and Promise missing while the other children were asleep. And that she looked for her in the gardens, farms and plantations in the neighborhood.
But when she failed to trace her, she returned and slept without notifying anybody about the missing of her child. She slept normally,” wondered Maate.
Promise’s lifeless body was discovered the following morning lying in the farm of Charles Mujenzi.
Police visited the crime scene, took the body to Rwakabengo health center III and detained Atubasise.
