Kampala —A suspected bomb explosion has rocked the Munyonyo area this Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the city as security agencies swiftly moved to cordon off the scene.
The blast occurred near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, where thousands of pilgrims had gathered for today’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
By press time, the exact number of casualties remained unconfirmed. However, preliminary reports indicate that human body parts and the wreckage of a motorcycle were found at the scene, pointing to at least one fatality.
It remains unclear whether the deceased was an innocent victim or the individual in possession of the explosive device.
Images of the aftermath began circulating on social media shortly after the incident, with a post by X user @enywaru reporting a “probable bomb blast in Munyonyo” and hinting at possible deaths.
Security forces, including the Counter-Terrorism Police Unit and bomb experts, have since taken control of the area as investigations into the nature of the blast continue.
The Police had not yet issued an official statement by the time of publication.
The incident comes amid heightened security measures in the capital, with the Uganda Police recently warning of potential threats to disrupt major public gatherings, including the highly attended Martyrs Day festivities.
Uganda Martyrs Day remains one of the most significant religious events on the country’s calendar, drawing pilgrims from across Uganda and neighbouring countries to commemorate the lives of 45 Christian converts executed between 1885 and 1887.
