Kampala, June 3, 2025 — A suspected suicide bombing attempt was thwarted this morning near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, just hours before the peak of Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. Two individuals, believed to be suicide bombers, were killed in the explosion.
According to Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) counter-terrorism unit intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb of Kampala. The operation was intelligence-led, aiming to prevent an attack on the ongoing Martyrs Day celebrations.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion occurred near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, where thousands of pilgrims had gathered for the annual religious commemoration. The blast caused panic among attendees, but no civilian casualties have been reported.
Security forces, including the military and police bomb squad, swiftly cordoned off the area. Forensic teams are conducting investigations to determine the nature of the blast, possible motives, and whether it was a targeted or accidental detonation.
