The greater Masaka remains inaccessible via the renowned Kampala-Masaka highway following the washing away of a section of of the bridge at Katonga river by floods.

On Thursday, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) together with Police were forced to divert traffic after floods cut off the road at the bridge.

A section of the bridge would later collapse under the weight of the water.

In a statement, UNRA reiterated their caution to motorists not to use this section to connect to Masaka and back to Kampala but instead use the alternative Mpigi—Kanoni—Maddu—Ssembabule-Masaka road as earlier communicated.

“The team is currently undertaking an assessment with the aim of restoring the damaged structure at the earliest possible time once the water levels subside and restore normal traffic flow. We regret the inconvenience caused to all road users,” reads part of the statement issued by Allan Ssempebwa, UNRA spokesperson.

Locals have blamed the flooding on extensive agriculture and construction in the wetland through which the road crosses.
