KAMULI – Police in Kamuli District have arrested a 50-year-old man accused of hacking off his wife’s hand with a machete during a violent domestic dispute before allegedly attempting to end his own life by consuming poison.
The suspect, identified as Ilish Stephen, also known as Kutegana, is a resident of Kadholwe Zone in Kasolwe Parish, Kagumba Sub-county.
According to Police, the attack occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on July 2, 2026, leaving the victim, Nakyaato Nite, 40, with life-threatening injuries after her left hand was severed at the wrist.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident stemmed from a domestic misunderstanding. Police say the suspect reportedly ordered his wife to leave their home before turning on her with a machete as he escorted her away, inflicting multiple injuries and fleeing the scene.
The victim raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to rush to her rescue before she was taken for urgent medical treatment.
Police immediately launched a manhunt and later traced the suspect, who was found unconscious after allegedly ingesting poison in an apparent suicide attempt.
He was rushed to Kamuli General Hospital, where he remains admitted under police guard.
Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said the suspect will be charged with attempted murder once he recovers and is declared medically fit.
“We strongly condemn all forms of domestic and gender-based violence. We urge members of the public to seek peaceful means of resolving domestic disputes and to report incidents of violence before they escalate into serious crimes,” Lubega said.
The latest attack has renewed concern over rising cases of domestic violence in Kamuli District, where authorities say several serious incidents have been recorded in recent years.
Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
