Security operatives netted a total of 24 people including 3 LCI chairpersons in alleged theft of animals in Karamoja subregion in the months of May and June, according to a report released on Sunday, June 18, 2023 in Moroto.
Also among the suspects is an LCII chairperson and 8 renowned cattle traders.
While briefing the media, the 3rd Division Commander, Major General, Don Nabasa said, the 3 LCI chairperson are from Kotido district while the LCII chairperson of Kariita parish in Amudat district.
He says the four local leaders were arrested after the joint security forces intercepted cattle traders with stolen animals from both Kotido and Amudat districts but with documents given to them by those leaders.
Nabasa questioned the seriousness of local council leaders towards building peace for karamoja.
The General disclosed that although not all leaders involve themselves in acts of aiding theft, there are those who habitually do it.
“We have just handful of greedy leaders contributing towards this insecurity. They leave us not knowing whether they for peace or chaos,” Nabasa added.
