The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Kasese District Education Officer, George Mayinja and Senior Inspector of Schools, Erinest Thabugha in connection with the the recent rebel attack on Lhubiria Secondary School in Kasese district that left at least 42 people, mostly students, killed.
Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga told the Eye Media Friday June 23, 2023 afternoon that the duo are suspected to have collaborations with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group that made the attack.
“It’s true they are arrested on allegations of collaborating with the ADF,” said Enanga.
Believed to be 5 in number, the militants attacked the Lhubiriha secondary school in Mpondwe at around 11:30pm on Friday last week.
They entered dormitories, setting fire and using machetes to kill and maim the pupils, officials said.
The ADF are based in the neighbouring Congo whose border is only 2Km from Mpondwe.
Twenty of the killed students were attacked with machetes and 17 of them burned to death, according to Uganda’s information minister, Chris Baryomunsi.
The burnt bodies were taken to hospital for DNA since they were badly burnt.
The rebels also abducted 6 and forced them to carry for them food stuffs from the school’s stores to Congo.
The entire world has condemned the attack and Ugandan forces are doing everything possible to have the rebels captured.
UPDF soldiers are pursuing the insurgents towards the DR Congo’s Virunga national park – which is home to rare species, including mountain gorillas.
Militias including the ADF also use the vast expanse, which borders Uganda and Rwanda, as a hideout.
The Ugandan army has also deployed helicopters to help track the rebel group over mountainous terrain.
