Cabinet has extended the terms if office of Local Councils One and Two.
This was Tuesday July 25, 2023 revealed by Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance during a press conference.
Baryomunsi said the decision to extend the terms of office for the village and parish leaders was taken by the Monday July 24, 2023 cabinet meeting chaired by President Museveni.
He said cabinet invoked a clause in the Local Government Act that empowers the minister to extend the terms for a period not extending 180 days.
The extension takes effects from July 10, 2023 when the previous terms expired.
Following the cabinet decision, the minister of Local Government is expected to present to the Parliament a submission requesting for Parliamentary approval before issuing a notice to the public confirming the extension.
During the 180, government will be looking for funds to carry out elections of the two categories.
