In a powerful show of resilience, determination, and transformative leadership, Namutumba Woman MP and NRM CEC Vice Chairperson Eastern Uganda hopeful, Hon. Mariam Naigaga, has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of teenage mothers in her district.

Her journey of supporting these young women culminated in a moving graduation ceremony on April 4, 2025, where several of them received DIT-accredited certificates in various vocational skills.

The story traces its roots back to 2021, during the post-COVID-19 era, when the effects of school closures and lockdowns were still rippling through communities. Recognizing the alarming rise in teenage pregnancies, Naigaga convened a conference at Basoga Nsandu Vocational Institute under the theme “Give a Girl Child a Second Chance.” The meeting brought together 375 teenage mothers, including a 12-year-old, all seeking a new path in life. Tragically, 43 of them were found to be HIV positive.

This moment served as a turning point for Naigaga. “It was heartbreaking, but it was also a call to action,” she remarked. Moved by the pain and vulnerability of these girls, she partnered with like-minded individuals to form the Bana Foundation, a community-based organization (CBO) designed to provide a fresh start through skills training and mentorship.

The initiative started small, offering some girls access to formal education and others direct vocational training. Over the years, it grew into a full-fledged skilling hub focused on empowering young mothers with sustainable livelihoods.
At the graduation ceremony, the impact of Bana Foundation was tangible.

The teenage mothers showcased their newly acquired skills in fashion and design, hairdressing, catering, and other trades. Smiles beamed on their faces as they received certificates that symbolize not just training, but rebirth.
One of the most emotional moments came from graduate Nakisige Hanifa, who had trained in fashion and design. “When I conceived at an early age, I thought it was the end,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “But I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. I have a skill to sustain myself. Thank you so much, Hon. Naigaga, for lifting me up again.”

Chief Guest Hope Ritah Aciro, Executive Director of UWONET, praised the girls for their courage and commended Naigaga for her commitment. “Your resilience is inspiring. Do not lose focus — aim higher,” she advised the graduates. She also pledged UWONET’s continued support, promising more training equipment for the foundation.

Rose Nalubega, Chairperson of the Bana Foundation Board, used the occasion to shed light on the root causes of the teenage pregnancy crisis in Busoga. She decried the growing trend of older men preying on young girls, often through manipulative gifts. “It’s a pity,” she said, “many of our girls are being defiled by mostly boda boda men who entice them with soda and chapati.”
Nalubega referenced her own research conducted in Bugweri district, revealing a disturbing pattern of exploitation and early marriages.

Naigaga, never one to shy away from systemic issues, called on the district leadership, including the RDC, to recommend the graduates for the GROW project — a government initiative that provides start-up capital for youth-led enterprises. “These girls now have the skills; they just need a push to begin their journey of economic independence,” she noted.
Looking beyond Namutumba, Naigaga used the platform to speak directly to NRM delegates, reminding them of her tangible contributions to the girl child. “This should enlighten my people in Eastern Uganda. I want to extend such empowerment to a broader part of our region,” she said. “Entrust me with the CEC leadership, and together we will change Eastern Uganda.”

Her appeal was met with nods of agreement from community members, leaders, and parents who have witnessed the transformation she has brought into the lives of teenage mothers in the district.

Mariam Naigaga’s journey with the Bana Foundation is more than just a community initiative — it is a model for compassionate leadership rooted in action. Her work serves as a testament to the fact that when given a second chance and the right support, even the most vulnerable can rise, thrive, and become agents of change.
