The body of Eng. Gershom Rwakasanga, 53, Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) Jinja Storage Terminal Operations Manager, has been recovered from the River Nile at Busowoko Falls in Jinja District.
Eng. Rwakasanga met his tragic fate on Saturday, October 11, during a family outing with his daughter at Busowoko Falls, located in Butagaya Subcounty. According to reports, the father and daughter arrived at the falls around 5:30 PM, but the drowning occurred shortly before, at approximately 4:30 PM. Following the incident, police and local rescue teams launched a search operation that lasted until midday on Sunday, October 12, when his body was successfully retrieved.
“The Jinja Police Marine Unit, together with local divers, managed to recover the body safely. The deceased has been taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem,” said James Mubi, SP, PRO Kiira Region/Jinja.
UNOC expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Eng. Rwakasanga, describing him as a dedicated and highly valued member of the company. Authorities at Busowoko Falls say the situation has since returned to normal, with police continuing to sensitize local communities on water safety and precautions to prevent future tragedies.
The loss has left colleagues, family, and the local community in shock, highlighting the dangers associated with recreational activities near natural water bodies.
