KAMULI – It was a scene of confusion and curiosity as dozens of men reportedly flocked the office of the Resident District Commissioner, of Kamuli in eastern Uganda, demanding answers over a bizarre rumour that government is distributing “free wives.” In fact most of the men who visited the office on Tuesday April 28, 2026, had gone to pick up the free wives, maize flour and iron sheets plus beddings.
The unusual claims, which have been making rounds in villages and on WhatsApp platforms, allege that men who present National IDs are being given wives, posho, iron sheets, and even beds under a supposed government programme.
However, Kamuli RDC, Madam Rose Birungi, has come out strongly to dismiss the allegations, describing them as false, misleading, and dangerous.
“Surprisingly, some of these people were even at my office today claiming that government is supplying them with women, maize flour and roofing sheets. Please tell them that government has no farm of women,” Birungi said.
Sources indicate that the rumour caused panic in several homes, with married women reportedly growing uneasy over fears that their husbands could be enticed into taking second wives under the alleged arrangement.
Local leaders have also been caught off guard. Mbulamuti LCIII Chairperson-elect, Counsel Mbodhe Willy Nantatya, revealed that men have been approaching leaders in large numbers seeking guidance on how to benefit from the supposed programme.
“We have been approached by many able men asking about this issue, yet we have no information at all,” he said.
Authorities are now warning the public to remain vigilant, especially against individuals moving around collecting National IDs under false pretences, noting that such acts could be linked to fraud.
As the rumour continues to circulate, leaders are urging residents to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary tension in communities and families.
