Today, we gather at Nkoyoyo Boarding Primary School in Matale, Buikwe District, for the national celebrations of Labour Day—a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the men and women whose daily labour sustains our nation.
Labour is the backbone of Uganda’s growth and stability. From the farmer who tills the soil at sunrise, to the teacher who shapes the minds of our children, from the health worker who stands at the frontline of saving lives, to the security personnel who safeguard our peace—each contributes to a collective national effort that keeps Uganda moving forward. Their work is not merely economic; it is foundational to our national security, unity, and resilience.
Indeed, national security is not only preserved by those in uniform. It is strengthened by productive citizens who create livelihoods, reduce vulnerability, and foster stability within communities. A hardworking population is a nation’s first line of defence against poverty, crime, and disorder. In this regard, every worker—formal or informal—is a vital pillar in Uganda’s peace and prosperity.
As we celebrate today, we must also acknowledge the deliberate efforts by government to uplift the welfare of workers and expand opportunities for all. Strategic interventions such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and other livelihood programmes are steadily transitioning Ugandans into the money economy. Investments in infrastructure, agriculture, and industrialisation continue to create jobs and stimulate growth across the country.
Of particular significance is the visionary initiative of Presidential Industrial Skilling Hubs, championed under the leadership of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. These hubs, now established across all regions of Uganda, are equipping thousands of young people with practical, hands-on skills in areas such as carpentry, welding, tailoring, mechanics, and more. This is not only restoring dignity to labour but also empowering our youth to become job creators rather than job seekers. It is a clear testament to a leadership that understands that the future of Uganda lies in a skilled and productive population.
Women equally stand at the centre of Uganda’s labour force. Across farms, markets, enterprises, and institutions, they continue to demonstrate resilience, dedication, and excellence. Their contribution goes beyond economic productivity—they are the anchors of families and communities. Empowering women is therefore not optional; it is essential for inclusive and sustainable development.
Our youth, who form the majority of our population, carry the promise of tomorrow. Their energy, innovation, and adaptability are critical assets that must be nurtured through access to education, skills training, and economic opportunities. Labour Day serves as a reminder that investing in the youth is investing in Uganda’s future.
As we commemorate this important day, let us rise in appreciation of every Ugandan who labours with honesty and commitment. Let us honour the sweat that feeds our nation, the intellect that drives our institutions, and the courage that protects our sovereignty. Above all, let us reaffirm our collective commitment—working hand in hand with government leadership—to build a Uganda where every worker is valued, every effort is recognised, and every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.
For indeed, Uganda’s continued transformation is anchored on the tireless hands of her people, guided by visionary leadership and strengthened through unity of purpose.
