IGANGA – A joint security operation by the Police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Defence Intelligence Security team has led to the arrest of six suspects accused of impersonating President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his daughter, Natasha Karugire, to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The intelligence-led operation was conducted on July 2, 2026, at around midday in Iganga District, where security operatives dismantled what they described as a criminal network that had been using fake identities and fraudulent online accounts to swindle victims in different parts of the country.

The suspects were identified as Mugudya Mustafa (17), Maganda Murishidi (18), Waiswa Muhammad (21), Kaima Jamiru (17), Mulawa Shafick (17) and Ngobi Sabath (15), all residents of Nandekula A Village, Bulubandi Parish, Nakigo Sub-county in Iganga District.

During the operation, security recovered nine mobile phones allegedly used in carrying out the fraudulent activities.

According to Police, a preliminary examination of the recovered phones uncovered several fake accounts, including a counterfeit Youth Development Application Fund allegedly operating under the name of Natasha K. Museveni.

Investigators say the suspects admitted to operating multiple fraudulent accounts to deceive members of the public into sending them money under false pretences.

The six suspects have since been transferred to Jinja Road Police Station for further investigations and case management.

The operation was confirmed by ASP Kasadha Michael, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga East, who urged the public to remain vigilant against online fraudsters and always verify information before sending money or sharing personal details.

Police have repeatedly warned Ugandans against falling victim to scammers who impersonate senior government officials and members of the First Family through fake social media accounts, phone calls and online fundraising schemes.
