The Executive Chairman of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Counsel Erias Lukwago, is expected to return to the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court today after failing to attend the previous court session due to ill health.
Lukwago’s absence at the last hearing was officially communicated by the Uganda Prisons Service, which informed the court that the veteran lawyer and opposition politician was admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
Prisons authorities told the court that Lukwago’s medical condition had made it impossible for him to appear before the magistrate, prompting an adjournment of the proceedings.
His expected appearance today comes amid heightened public interest in the case, with supporters from the People’s Front for Freedom and other opposition groups expected to follow the proceedings closely.
Lukwago is among several opposition figures facing charges in a case that has attracted national attention. His legal team has previously raised concerns over his health and the conditions under which he has been held, while prosecution maintains that the case should proceed in accordance with the law.
Today’s court session is expected to determine the next course of action in the matter, including whether the case will proceed to hearing or be adjourned further depending on the submissions made by both the prosecution and the defence.
Security is expected to be heightened around the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court as the proceedings get underway.
Eye Media will provide updates as the court session unfolds.
