JINJA DISTRICT: The Minister for Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, has directed Jinja District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Lillian Nakamatte to step aside.
The directive follows allegations of corruption, illegal recruitment and the frustration of government programmes in the district.
Balaam, on Tuesday stormed Jinja District after reports emerged implicating District Chairperson Moses Batwala and the CAO in the alleged embezzlement of government funds and irregular recruitment of workers.
The ministers’ intervention followed a petition submitted by Jinja District Speaker Simon Kibombo.
Kibombo presented documents alleging forgery and irregular recruitment practices in the district.
He accused the CAO of being at the centre of the district’s administrative problems.
He further alleged that illegal recruitment exercises had undermined service delivery and government programmes.
During a meeting with district leaders, Minister Balaam tasked Nakamatte to explain the allegations against her.
Witnesses said the CAO appeared visibly shaken as she responded to questions from the minister.
Balaam later directed her to step aside to allow investigations to proceed without interference.
He warned that any officials found culpable would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
The developments have sparked concern among residents and local leaders.
Several leaders have called for a thorough investigation into the management of public resources and recruitment processes in the district.
