Mulago National Referral Hospital has recommended that jailed lawyer and politician Erias Lukwago be allowed to travel to India for specialized medical treatment, citing complications arising from a previous spinal surgery.
A medical report dated June 30, 2026, authored by Mulago Executive Director Dr. Rosemary Byanyima and addressed to the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, indicates that a team of five specialists was constituted on June 26 to assess Lukwago’s health condition.

According to the report, while Lukwago’s high blood pressure and unresolved post-COVID-19 lung complications with residual mild cylindrical bronchiectasis can be managed in Uganda, doctors expressed concern over his persistent upper limbs radiculitis linked to a previous disc replacement surgery performed in India.
Dr. Byanyima advised that Lukwago should be allowed to return to India and be reviewed by the surgeons who conducted the original spinal operation.
She noted that the recommendation became necessary because Mulago National Referral Hospital was unable to repeat Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) investigations due to uncertainty surrounding the compatibility of the implants used during the initial spine surgery.
The latest development comes after Lukwago appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court via Zoom on Tuesday, pleading to be granted bail to seek specialized treatment abroad, saying he was in acute pain.
However, his application was not heard after the presiding magistrate reportedly became indisposed, leaving the matter unresolved.
The medical report is expected to bolster efforts by Lukwago’s legal team to secure his temporary release and permission to seek treatment in India, where his doctors believe he can receive the specialized care required for his condition.
The court is yet to communicate when the bail application will be heard.
