The government has said it has not yet reached a final decision on the reopening of Nation Media Group (NMG) outlets in Uganda, insisting that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

ICT and National Guidance Minister, Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, said the government is still reviewing the circumstances surrounding the closure of the media houses and will communicate its position once the inquiry is complete.

“We are still investigating, and after the inquiry, we shall communicate,” Lumumba said on Tuesday.

The minister’s remarks come amid growing public interest in the fate of Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM, whose operations have remained suspended for nearly two weeks.

Government officials say that although the transfer of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development’s controlling stake in Nation Media Group has been completed, the change in ownership does not bring an automatic end to the government’s review process.

Authorities have not disclosed the exact issues still under investigation or indicated when a final decision on the reopening of the affected media outlets will be announced.

The prolonged shutdown has affected more than 700 employees and triggered a national debate on media freedom, investment and press regulation in Uganda.

With the ownership transition now complete, attention has shifted to the government’s ongoing inquiry, whose findings are expected to determine when, and under what conditions, Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM can resume operations.
