Fahad Lukwago, the eldest son of opposition politician and lawyer Erias Lukwago, has spoken publicly about the emotional pain his family is enduring as his father remains in detention.
Speaking during an X Space discussion hosted by AgoraCFR on Tuesday, Fahad said the family is deeply worried about Lukwago’s health and wellbeing while on remand.
“When you see your father going through that, it is definitely hurtful,” Fahad said.
He added that the family has entrusted the situation to God as they continue to endure the difficult period.
“We can only leave it to Allah,” he said.
Erias Lukwago, 56, was arrested on June 15, 2026, and later charged with misprision of treason alongside other suspects, including veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye. They have all denied the charges.
According to Fahad, the family’s biggest concern is his father’s health condition.
He said Lukwago suffers from several chronic illnesses, including hypertension, spinal complications, gastritis and respiratory problems, conditions that require specialised care and a strict diet.
“Our biggest worry is that he isn’t eating right,” Fahad said.
He also expressed frustration with the country’s justice system, saying the family’s experience had left them feeling failed by the law.
“The law has failed us,” he said.
Fahad, however, urged Ugandans to look beyond his father’s case and reflect on the broader treatment of detainees and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“Today it is my father, but tomorrow it can be your loved one too,” he said.
He concluded by calling on Ugandans to pray for the country.
“Pray for our people, pray for anyone, pray for Uganda, because a lot is happening right now in Uganda,” he said.
