Police in Kiboga District are investigating the suspected suicide of a 15-year-old girl who allegedly drowned herself in a neighbour’s dam following a disagreement with her mother.
The deceased has been identified as Nanyonjo Priscilla, a Senior Three student at Bukomero Secondary School and daughter of Nalugwa Fatuma, a resident of Temanakali Village in Bukomero Sub-county.
According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson SSP Lawrence Kigozi, the incident happened on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at around 6:00 a.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the girl’s mother asked her why she was not preparing to go to school.
The teenager, who was reportedly in a bad mood, responded that she had washed her school uniform before storming out of the house in protest.
She then crossed the road and headed to a nearby dam belonging to Mr. Kinalwa John, who resides in Kampala.
Her mother immediately followed her but only found her shoes abandoned at the edge of the dam.
By then, the teenager had allegedly jumped into the water.
The mother raised an alarm, attracting residents and local leaders, including the village chairperson, who later reported the matter to police.
Police officers visited the scene and recorded statements from witnesses.
A pair of shoes believed to belong to the deceased was recovered from the shore of the dam.
Authorities said the dam is approximately nine feet deep.
The body of Nanyonjo was later retrieved from the water and identified by relatives.
A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene before the body was handed over to the family for burial arrangements.
Police said the deceased had no known history of mental illness and had been raised by her mother.
Investigators are still trying to establish what could have pushed the teenager to take her own life.
Meanwhile, police have appealed to owners of dams and other water reservoirs to secure them properly to prevent similar tragedies.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
