Football fans and members of the business community in the Kiira Region have commended the Uganda Police Force for maintaining peace and security throughout the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament, which concluded on Sunday.
The appreciation was led by Baba Media Group presenter, popularly known as Shamlove, who, on behalf of bars, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses, praised the Kiira Regional Police Command under SSP Charles Nsaba for ensuring the month-long football festivities ended without any major security incidents.
Joshua Waiswa, a businessman from Iganga District, said he frequently travelled to Jinja City to watch World Cup matches, particularly those involving African teams, Spain and England, and was impressed by the level of security.
“I have been driving back and forth from Iganga to Jinja City to watch World Cup games, but we did not witness any security threats either in the city or along the Trans-African Highway,” he said.
Sports commentators Balondemu Joel and Mukisa Arafat also applauded the police, noting that throughout the tournament, which ran from June 11 to July 19, there were no reported thefts or major security breaches at the venues where fans gathered to watch the matches.
Popular Busoga-based YouTuber and YY Media Director Yaziid Yolisigira described Jinja City as Uganda’s leading tourism, cultural and entertainment hub, attributing its peaceful environment to the coordinated efforts of security agencies, including motorcycle patrol squads.
He expressed confidence that the region is well prepared to host the large numbers of football fans expected during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Meanwhile, Kiira Regional Police Commander SSP Charles Nsaba urged political aspirants and their supporters to emulate the discipline, unity and teamwork displayed by football fans during the World Cup.
He called on candidates in the ongoing LC I, LC II and Women Council elections to conduct peaceful campaigns, avoid abusive language and respect electoral guidelines to ensure a peaceful democratic process.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time, with Ferran Torres Garcia scoring the decisive goal to hand Spain the world title.
The commendation was contained in a press statement issued by SP James Mubi, the Kiira Regional Police spokesperson.
