Police in Apac District are holding the district National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary for Publicity, Daniel Eyit Angura, over the alleged theft and mismanagement of Shs186 million meant to facilitate party activities ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Eyit was handed over to police on Friday after an expanded Apac District NRM Executive Committee meeting resolved that he should face investigations over the alleged disappearance of the funds.

He is currently detained at Apac Central Police Station, where he has spent the weekend in custody.

His co-accused, Bonny Oja, the district NRM registrar, and Talib Okabo, the district NRM chairperson, had earlier recorded statements with police in March this year and were released on police bond. Eyit had reportedly remained at large until his arrest.

According to information presented during the meeting, the NRM Secretariat deposited Shs186 million into the district party bank account on January 13, 2026. It is alleged that the account signatories later withdrew the money and irregularly shared it among themselves instead of using it for the intended party activities.

The NRM National Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, Denis Hamson Obua, who chaired the meeting, said members resolved that police should thoroughly investigate the matter.

“The meeting recommended that the matter should be investigated because we found that some funds didn’t reach where they were supposed to go,” Obua said.

He added that the meeting also resolved to remove the three officials as signatories to the district party bank account to allow investigations to proceed without interference.

Under the new arrangement, Agness Akello Ebong, the district NRM vice chairperson, was appointed the principal signatory. Allan Okii, the acting district administrator, will serve as co-signatory alongside Ambrose Onapa, the NRM chairperson for Akokoro Sub-county.

Meanwhile, Talib Okabo welcomed the developments, saying he was pleased the matter was finally being investigated.

“I am happy that this matter is now getting closer to an end. Those who have been fighting us have now achieved their interest. They think we eat money in this office; let them come and witness,” Okabo said.

Police investigations into the alleged misappropriation of the campaign funds are ongoing.
