Security agencies in Busoga East have warned that they will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the upcoming Local Council I (LCI), Local Council II (LCII) and Women’s Council elections, saying intelligence has already identified individuals and groups planning to cause chaos.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said security agencies are aware of deliberate plans to interfere with the grassroots elections and have already intensified operations to neutralize the threats.

“We shall not allow planners of disruption, radical groups, or any form of intimidation to disrupt the exercise,” Kasadha said.

He revealed that security had identified several threats, including planned violence arising from intra-party rivalries, emerging radical groups mobilizing to create instability, unlawful attempts to influence election outcomes and the use of hired goons to intimidate voters.

According to Kasadha, intelligence-led operations are already underway to dismantle criminal groups suspected of planning election-related violence.

He added that security agencies have mapped out electoral hotspots across the region and increased deployments to deter violence and ensure the safety of voters.

Kasadha urged all candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns and restrain their supporters from engaging in violence, intimidation or any acts of hooliganism.

“Compete peacefully and advise your supporters to desist from violence, intimidation and hooliganism as they will not be tolerated,” he warned.

He also encouraged voters to turn up in large numbers and report cases of bribery, threats and other election malpractices to the Police, the Electoral Commission or local authorities.

Kasadha further appealed to the media and election observers to expose any malpractice and continue promoting messages of peace before, during and after the elections.

He emphasized that the LCI, LCII and Women’s Council elections are the foundation of Uganda’s democracy because they determine leaders who serve closest to the people.

Police, he added, are working closely with the Electoral Commission and other security agencies to guarantee free, fair and peaceful elections throughout the region.
