Police in the Wamala Region have arrested five suspects in connection with the brutal murder of a couple during an aggravated robbery in Myanzi Sub-county, Kassanda District earlier this month.
The suspects are accused of participating in the July 2, 2026 attack at the home of Mr. Lukwago in Lukira Village, where the assailants allegedly killed two of his workers, identified as 48-year-old Joseph Ssali and his wife, Regina Mariza.
According to police, the attackers also made away with an unspecified amount of money and seven bags of coffee.
Joseph Ssali’s body was discovered the following day after residents led by the area LC I Chairperson, Sulaiman Kakinda, reported the incident to Myanzi Police Station.
His wife’s body was recovered six days later, on July 8, buried halfway in neighbouring Kyaseta Village.
The double murder sent shockwaves across Lukira Village, Myanzi Sub-county and the wider Kassanda District, leaving residents gripped with fear.
Police say investigators have been pursuing leads since the crime was reported, culminating in a breakthrough with the arrest of one suspect in Masaka City before four others were rounded up in Myanzi Sub-county.
The suspects have been identified as Joan Nakavuma, 38, a resident of Katwe in Masaka City; Kasumba Babangida, 26, a casual worker from Kalama LC I, Myanzi Parish; Meddy Nsereko, also known as “Baamu Mukooki”, 32, of Kalama LC I; Damian Kule, 24, a farmer and boda boda rider from Kalama LC I; and John Yamulemye, also known as “Doctor”, 23, a casual worker from Kalama LC I.
Police said several exhibits have been recovered during the ongoing investigations, including motorcycles believed to have been used by the suspects to travel to and from the crime scene.
Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Rachael Kigozi said the arrests demonstrate the force’s growing investigative capacity through the combined use of professional detectives, the Flying Squad Unit, forensic analytical tools, tracking technology, CCTV footage and canine units.
She appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies, noting that community support remains essential in fighting crime.
The five suspects are expected to be arraigned before court once the Resident State Attorney in Kassanda sanctions the charges.
