Police in Bushenyi District have arrested a Church of Uganda reverend over allegations of defiling a Primary Seven pupil from Kabushaho Primary School.
The suspect has been identified as Rev. Atwebembire Micheal, attached to Kabushaho Church of Uganda in West Ankole Diocese.
According to police, the case was reported by the head teacher of Kabushaho Primary School, Edinah Tumushimire, after fellow pupils allegedly noticed that the victim was frequently receiving money and gifts from the cleric. The pupils reportedly raised their concerns with school authorities, prompting an investigation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the reverend allegedly used money and gifts to lure the pupil while instructing her not to disclose their interactions.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and is currently being held at Bushenyi Police Station as investigations continue.
The Greater Bushenyi District Police Commander, SSP Godfrey Akirya, confirmed the arrest and said the case has been registered under CRB 721/2026.
Police have withheld the identity of the victim in line with child protection laws.
Authorities have urged parents, teachers and community members to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to law enforcement agencies.
Defilement is a serious criminal offence under Uganda’s laws and carries severe penalties upon conviction. The suspect remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
