Police in Mubende District have launched a manhunt for unknown assailants who killed a private security guard and stole his firearm during an attack at a coffee store in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Mutegule Joseph, 40, was a security guard employed by Uganda Securico Company Limited and deployed to guard Artica Coffee International Stores in Kagavu LC1, Budibaga Parish, Kalonga Sub-county.
According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, the attackers struck at around 5:00 a.m., assaulting the guard inside his room before dragging him approximately 200 metres into a nearby bush, where he was later found unconscious.
The suspects fled with a rifle bearing serial number UG30373337E104297 and three rounds of ammunition.
A caretaker at the coffee store was alerted to the incident and rushed the injured guard to hospital. However, Joseph died on the way.
Police say the deceased had served with Uganda Securico Company Limited for the past 15 years.
The incident was first reported at Kalonga Sub-county Police Station before officers from Mubende Central Police Station, led by the District Police Commander, visited and processed the scene.
A police canine unit was deployed to track the attackers but was unable to establish a trail after the crime scene had reportedly been tampered with before its arrival.
The body was taken to Mubende Hospital for a post-mortem examination as detectives recorded statements from witnesses.
Police, working jointly with the Regional Flying Squad Unit, say investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the suspects and recover the stolen firearm before it can be used in the commission of other crimes.
The force has also cautioned private security companies against deploying guards alone at high-risk facilities, saying single deployments leave both security personnel and the premises they protect vulnerable to attack.
Police have appealed to members of the public in Kalonga Sub-county and the surrounding areas to remain calm and share any information that could assist with the ongoing investigations.
