Police in Kasese District have arrested a suspect accused of murdering a man following a heated argument over the forthcoming LC I elections.

The deceased has been identified as Masereka Nelson, 30, a resident of Kisanga Village, Maliba Parish, Maliba Sub-county in Kasese District.

According to Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on the night of July 25, 2026, at about 9:50 p.m. in Kisanga Village.

Police say the deceased picked an argument with a man only identified as Sowedi over the upcoming LC I chairperson elections. The disagreement allegedly turned violent when the suspect picked up a stone and struck Masereka on the forehead.

Investigators say the victim fell to the ground, after which the suspect allegedly continued assaulting him until he became unconscious before fleeing the scene.

A friend rushed the injured man to a nearby drug shop for first aid before alerting his relatives. On the morning of July 26, the family transferred him to Rukoki Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 5:00 p.m.

Police later tracked down and arrested the suspect from his hideout in Bunyangabo District. He is expected to be transferred to Hiima Division for prosecution.

The incident comes as Uganda prepares to elect LC I chairpersons across more than 70,000 villages on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, in elections organized by the Electoral Commission.

Under the Local Government Act, LC I committees are mandated to oversee the implementation of council decisions, help maintain law and order, mobilize communities for development, support self-help projects, serve as the link between government and residents, and monitor the delivery of public services within their villages.

Police said investigations into the murder are ongoing and urged the public to remain peaceful throughout the election period.
