A 26-year-old man accused of murdering his 54-year-old uncle was lynched by an angry mob in Rubanda District in an incident that left two people dead.
The incident occurred on July 29, 2026, in Kiriba Village, Kagunga Parish, Bufundi Sub-county, according to the Kigezi Regional Police.
Police said the first victim, Arineitwe Prosper, 54, was allegedly attacked on the night of July 28 at around 10:00 p.m. while walking home from a nearby trading centre. Unknown assailants reportedly trailed him before stoning him to death.
Investigators said suspicion later fell on Ruhangariyo Osbert, 26, who had reportedly been involved in a long-standing family conflict with the deceased.
Enraged residents reportedly traced Osbert, tied his hands with a rope and lynched him before abandoning his body next to that of his uncle along a village road.
Police officers responded to the scene and conveyed both bodies to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime condemned the mob killing, urging members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead allow the justice system to handle criminal cases.
He appealed to anyone with information that could help identify and arrest those responsible for the murder of Arineitwe Prosper to cooperate with the police.
Tumushime also called on residents to remain calm and avoid speculation that could jeopardize investigations, assuring the affected families that all efforts are being made to bring those responsible to justice.
Investigations into both deaths are ongoing.
