The Uganda Police Force has arrested 46 suspected members of the notorious “Gazz Group” during an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal gangs in Kasese Municipality.
The Gazz Group is a criminal gang that police say has been terrorising residents through robberies, burglaries, theft and the snatching of bags from night travellers. The latest operation was conducted on the evening of August 2, 2026, in the cells of Nyakasanga, Kisanga, Kidodo and Majengo in Central Division, Kasese Municipality, following intelligence reports and growing public concern over rising crime.
According to Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the operation was supervised by the Kasese Division District Police Commander, SP H. Hiwumbire, and commanded by the Officer-in-Charge of Nyakasanga Police Station, ASP Lukol.
Police said the crackdown followed intelligence analysis indicating that the gang had regrouped and resumed criminal activities in the municipality.
A total of 46 suspects were arrested during the operation and are currently in police custody. They have been charged with common nuisance and possession of opium and are awaiting screening as investigations continue.
Police said the intelligence-led operations will be extended to other parts of Kasese Town to curb crime and ensure that all wanted suspects are brought to justice.
ASP Maate urged members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information that can help identify and apprehend criminal elements operating within their communities.
