On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Police arrested 11 commuter taxi drivers during a night enforcement operation at the Maya checkpoint along Masaka Highway for engaging in dangerous loading, a traffic offence that endangers the lives of passengers and other road users.

According to the Traffic Police, the suspects were intercepted through intelligence-led operations after attempting to evade routine traffic checkpoints by travelling at night. The drivers were detained and will be arraigned in court to answer charges under the Road Safety Act, Cap. 347.

Police said dangerous loading remains one of the most common traffic offences, especially during night hours when some motorists mistakenly believe enforcement is minimal. Authorities warned that they have intensified the crackdown and that anyone found violating the law will be arrested and prosecuted.

Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura explained that every vehicle is designed and licensed to carry a specific number of passengers. Exceeding the authorised passenger capacity or carrying excessive loads inside or on top of passenger vehicles alters the vehicle’s centre of gravity, making it unstable and significantly increasing the risk of tyre bursts, loss of control, running off the road, or overturning.

He urged all drivers, vehicle owners and operators to comply with traffic regulations by carrying only the authorised number of passengers and ensuring their vehicles are used safely at all times.

“No journey is worth risking human life,” SP Kananura said, reiterating the Traffic Police’s commitment to enforcing road safety laws and protecting all road users.
