Three supporters of a defeated LCI chairperson candidate were arrested on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, after taking to the streets to protest the election results in Namutumba District.
The suspects are Isabirye Faruku, the alleged group leader, Walugada Moses and Isabirye Moses. They are detained at CPS Namutumba.
Police said the protest started at about 10:30am. It took place in Bulogo Village, Namutumba North Ward, Namutumba Town Council.
The demonstrators were supporters of Isabirye Faruku. He lost the LCI Chairperson election to Muwite Moses.
The group marched from Nakalokwe Church of Uganda to the Electoral Commission offices. They chanted slogans and beat drums along the way.
The protesters claimed the District Returning Officer declared the wrong winner. They demanded that the election results be overturned.
The District Police Commander, SP Byansi Muhamed, led a team of officers to the scene. Police first attempted to engage the protesters peacefully.
Police said the group became violent during the engagement. The protesters allegedly pelted stones at the officers.
Officers fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Police said the action prevented further violence and protected the Electoral Commission offices.
Police also impounded two Bajaj Boxer motorcycles. They bear registration numbers UFB 268F and UFX 343J.
The motorcycles were allegedly being used to mobilise the demonstrators. Investigations into their role are ongoing.
The suspects remain in police custody on charges of inciting violence. The case was registered under SD REF 35/05/08/2026.
Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha urged aggrieved candidates to seek legal redress. He asked them to use the courts instead of taking to the streets.
He reminded the public that demonstrations must be peaceful. He added that acts of violence and attacks on security officers will not be tolerated.
