A 17-year-old Senior Three student from Irundu Secondary School in Buyende District has died after he was reportedly expelled from school for allegedly being found in possession of a mobile phone.

The deceased was Thursday August 6, 2026 morning identified by authorities as Amuza Basoome, a son of Mr Abasa Dhikusooka of Nabirumba Parish, Nabwigulu Sub-county in Kamuli District. His death has left residents in shock.

Mr Mberenge Kitimbo, a former councillor for Nabwigulu Sub-county, said the student had recently been sent home from school after the phone was reportedly discovered in his possession.

He described the incident as heartbreaking and called for greater guidance and counselling for learners. He said discipline should always be accompanied by proper support for children.

Nabwigulu Sub-county LCIII Chairperson George Bogere said the student was questioned by his father after returning home but declined to explain how he had obtained the mobile phone.

Bogere said the tragedy is the second such death involving a young person reported in the area within two weeks. He urged parents, community leaders and religious leaders to strengthen guidance and support for young people.

He also encouraged anyone experiencing emotional distress to seek help from trusted family members, friends, religious leaders or other supportive people instead of suffering in silence.

Kamuli District Private School Owners Association chairperson George Byantuyo described the incident as a setback for the education sector. He urged schools, parents and learners to comply with the Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines banning mobile phones in schools.

Byantuyo also appealed to parents to maintain open communication with their children. He said a supportive home environment helps young people share their challenges before they become overwhelming.

Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega confirmed that police responded to the incident and later released the body to the family for burial as investigations continue.

Lubega called for stronger guidance and counselling services in schools and homes. He said schools and families must work together to support learners facing emotional and personal challenges.
