Police in Kasese District on Tuesday August 11, 2026 opened investigations after a pupil was found dead in River Mpondwe, with preliminary findings indicating strangulation.
The deceased, identified as Mbusa Michael, was a pupil at Nyakahya Primary School and a resident of Kyambogho Cell, Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.
Ruwenzori East Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate said Michael had been staying with his brother-in-law, Masereka Deogracious, in Kyambogho Cell.
Police said the pupil disappeared from home at about 6:00pm on Monday August 10, 2026. His relatives reportedly searched for him but failed to locate him.
On Tuesday, residents reported seeing an unidentified body floating in River Mpondwe. Police responded and later established that the deceased was Michael.
Detectives visited, examined and documented the scene before taking the body to Bwera mortuary for a postmortem examination.
According to police, preliminary findings indicated that Michael had been strangled before his body was dumped in the river.
Police have not identified the person or people responsible for the killing.
Maate said investigations are continuing, with detectives pursuing leads aimed at identifying and arresting those responsible.
